Travel Czech motorways legally and confidently
A Czech digital vignette (Czech: elektronická dálniční známka) is a mandatory electronic toll permit required for driving on Czech motorways and expressways. Unlike the old physical sticker system, the digital vignette is registered in a national database and linked to your vehicle's licence plate number. There is no physical sticker to affix to your windscreen.
The digital system was introduced on 1 January 2021, replacing the paper sticker vignettes that had been in use since 1997. The transition was managed by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure (SFDI) and the operator CzechToll. The official purchase portal is edalnice.cz, operated by the Czech Ministry of Transport.
Driving on a Czech motorway or expressway without a valid vignette is a traffic offence subject to a fine. Enforcement is carried out automatically by camera systems installed at motorway entry points across the country, as well as by police spot checks. The fine for driving without a valid vignette can reach up to 10,000 CZK for on-the-spot settlement, or higher if the matter proceeds to administrative proceedings.

Zdeněk HorákNo. The vignette is only required on motorways (D-roads) and expressways (R-roads). First-class roads (I. třídy), second-class roads and other roads do not require a vignette. However, if your route uses any section of motorway or expressway, you must have a valid vignette for your vehicle.
Yes, you can purchase the digital vignette at authorised points of sale near border crossings, including petrol stations and post offices. You can also buy it online at edalnice.cz before your trip. There is no physical sticker — the vignette is registered electronically to your licence plate.
If you select today as the start date, the vignette is valid from the moment of purchase. If you select a future start date, it becomes valid at 00:00 (midnight) on that date. There is no waiting period for same-day purchases.
A vignette with an incorrect licence plate is invalid. You would need to purchase a new vignette with the correct plate. Refunds for incorrectly entered plates are handled through the official CzechToll customer service. Always double-check the plate before confirming payment.
